Tens of thousands of people protested in Budapest on Saturday against austerity measures, as European finance ministers met nearby to defend proposals to defeat the region’s crippling debt crisis.
European and local trade unions held a demonstration in Budapest Saturday, April 9, 2011 to protest against austerity measures, which European finance ministers said were unavoidable.
Organizers estimated a turnout about 40,000 people, who marched along the main avenue of the Hungarian capital, as EU finance ministers were completing a two-day meeting. Hungary currently holds the presidency of the European Union.
